100% private — files never leave your device

3GPP2 Mobile Video and Gzipped TAR (TGZ) exist for different jobs: 3G2 is the CDMA-era mobile video format — tiny, low-resolution clips from old feature phones. Convert TGZ exactly like TAR.GZ — unpack, repack or inspect.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the 3G2 format

3G2 is the 3GPP2 variant of the mobile video format family, born on CDMA networks (Verizon, KDDI) where 3GP ruled GSM sides. Structurally it is a cousin of MP4 carrying H.263 or H.264 baseline video with QCELP/EVRC or AMR audio.

It shares 3GP's fate: low-resolution clips trapped on old phones. Conversion to MP4 is lossless in spirit — the pixels simply move into a container every modern device accepts.

+Strengths

  • ✓Tiny files for its era
  • ✓Structurally close to MP4 — clean conversions

!Limitations

  • −Low resolution and quality ceiling
  • −Obsolete outside old CDMA phones

About the TGZ format

TAR.GZ is the classic Unix distribution shape: a TAR bundle squeezed through gzip (DEFLATE-based). Every Linux package of source code, every Apache tarball, every data-science dataset arrives this way. Decompression is a pipeline — untar the gzip stream — and the format is understood everywhere Unix ideas went.

gzip compresses the whole archive as one stream, which keeps ratio decent for text-heavy trees but means reaching file #400 requires decompressing the previous 399. Modern alternatives (zstd) are faster at similar ratios, yet tar.gz remains the safest common denominator.

+Strengths

  • ✓Universally understood on Unix-like systems
  • ✓Good ratio for text and source trees
  • ✓Preserves Unix permissions via TAR

!Limitations

  • −Single stream — no random access
  • −Slower than modern zstd
  • −Two-step format (tar + gzip)

Why convert 3G2 to TGZ?

Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Low resolution and quality ceiling TGZ works differently: Universally understood on Unix-like systems If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this 3G2 to TGZ converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for 3G2 to TGZ?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Will the audio track be kept?

Yes. The audio is carried over and re-encoded to the standard audio codec of TGZ, staying in sync with the video. If your 3G2 file has multiple audio tracks, the first one is used.

Why is video conversion slower than image conversion?

Every frame has to be decoded and re-encoded. This site runs that work on your own CPU via WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, but a multi-minute video reasonably takes a few minutes. Images, by comparison, are single-frame jobs.
