AVI to JPG Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
AVI is Microsoft’s classic video container from the 90s. Files are large by modern standards but old devices and software still produce them. JPG is supported by virtually every camera, phone, browser and app — the safest choice when you need maximum compatibility for photos.
iLoveConverter processes everything locally on your computer, which makes it private and fast: no upload wait, no server storage, no limits. Add as many files as you like — batch conversion is built in.

About the AVI format
AVI (Microsoft, 1992) is one of the oldest video containers still encountered. It has no native understanding of modern features — variable frame rates, modern codecs, subtitles, chapters — and stores everything through a 32-bit indexing system that caps reliable file sizes around 2 GB (OpenDML extensions patched some of this). Most AVIs you meet today are DivX/Xvid-era rips or old capture-card output.
There is no reason to produce AVI today; the realistic task is converting old libraries into MP4, which typically cuts file size by half or more at equal or better quality.
+ Strengths
- ✓Opens in legacy Windows tooling
- ✓Simple structure, decades of player support
! Limitations
- −Obsolete: no modern codecs or features by design
- −Large overhead, ~2 GB practical ceiling
- −Codec zoo inside — playback is guesswork
About the JPG format
JPG (short for JPEG, the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee that standardized it in 1992) has been the default photo format for over three decades. It compresses photographs using the discrete cosine transform: the image is split into 8×8 blocks, and details the human eye is bad at noticing are discarded. The result is files many times smaller than uncompressed data, at a quality level you control when saving.
In practice JPG is unbeatable for photographs and smooth gradients — camera memory cards, messaging apps and the web all assume it. It is a poor fit for screenshots, logos or anything with sharp edges and flat color, where compression leaves visible ringing around text. There is no transparency support, color depth is capped at 8 bits per channel, and every re-save with compression compounds tiny generational losses.
+ Strengths
- ✓Opens on literally every device, app and browser made in the last 30 years
- ✓Compresses photos dramatically — typically 10:1 or better with little visible loss
- ✓Quality level is adjustable, so you can trade fidelity for file size
- ✓Mature ecosystem: EXIF metadata, ICC profiles and progressive loading all supported
! Limitations
- −Lossy — artifacts appear on text, sharp edges and flat areas
- −No transparency, so overlays and logos need PNG or WebP instead
- −Repeated re-saving at low quality permanently degrades the image
Why convert AVI to JPG?

Obsolete: no modern codecs or features by design JPG works differently: Opens on literally every device, app and browser made in the last 30 years If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this AVI to JPG converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Will converting AVI to JPG reduce quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so a small amount of recompression is unavoidable. The quality slider lets you choose between maximum fidelity and smallest file size — the default is visually indistinguishable for photos.
Will the audio track be kept?
Yes. The audio is carried over and re-encoded to the standard audio codec of JPG, staying in sync with the video. If your AVI file has multiple audio tracks, the first one is used.
Why is video conversion slower than image conversion?
Every frame has to be decoded and re-encoded. This site runs that work on your own CPU via WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, but a multi-minute video reasonably takes a few minutes. Images, by comparison, are single-frame jobs.
