AVIF TIF
100% private — files never leave your device

AVIF Image and Tagged Image File (TIF) exist for different jobs: AVIF is the newest generation of image format, based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses even better than WebP and JPG, supports HDR and 12-bit color, though encoding takes noticeably longer. Files ending in .tif convert exactly like .tif → everything TIFF does, this does.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the AVIF format

AVIF wraps AV1 intra-frame coding inside a HEIF container, championed by Netflix and the Alliance for Open Media. It is currently the compression king of still images: at typical web sizes it beats JPG and WebP visibly, it inherits 10/12-bit color, HDR and wide gamut from its video heritage, and it animates. Being AV1-based, it is royalty-free.

The trade-off is encoding cost: AVIF encoding is genuinely slow in software, which matters for build pipelines and batch jobs. Support is solid in every current browser (Safari since 16.4, Chrome since 85), while many native apps and older photo tools still shrug at it.

+Strengths

  • ✓Best-in-class compression at web sizes
  • ✓HDR, 10/12-bit color and wide gamut supported
  • ✓Royalty-free (AV1) and animation-capable

!Limitations

  • −Encoding is slow, especially in software
  • −Native app and photo-tool support still maturing
  • −No progressive decoding

About the TIF format

TIFF, introduced by Aldus in 1986 and maintained by Adobe since, is the workhorse of the scanning, printing and archiving industries. It is a tag-based container: baseline RGB, CMYK, grayscale and indexed color, compressed with lossless LZW or ZIP (or not at all), with 8- or 16-bit depth and even multiple pages in a single file. A scanned contract or a print-ready magazine page lives in TIFF.

Its historical weakness is dialect fragmentation: the tag system is so flexible that exotic TIFFs — GeoTIFFs, fax TIFFs, certain 16-bit CMYK variants — still trip up careless readers. Files are huge, and no browser displays TIFF natively, so it never escaped its professional niches.

+Strengths

  • ✓Lossless with up to 16-bit-per-channel depth
  • ✓Multipage support — one file, many scans
  • ✓CMYK and print-industry color handling
  • ✓Rich, extensible tag metadata for archiving

!Limitations

  • −Very large files, even compressed
  • −Dialect fragmentation trips up simple readers
  • −No native browser display

Why convert AVIF to TIF?

Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Encoding is slow, especially in software TIF works differently: Lossless with up to 16-bit-per-channel depth If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AVIF to TIF converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Will I lose quality converting AVIF to TIF?

No — TIF is a lossless format, so every pixel of the converted image matches your original AVIF file. You can also adjust the quality/size balance before converting when the target format supports compression.

What happens to EXIF data and other metadata?

Conversions here re-encode the image, and re-encoding generally does not carry the original metadata over. If the EXIF data of your AVIF files matters (camera model, GPS, timestamps), keep the original file as the master and treat the converted copy as the shareable version.

Can I convert several AVIF files at once?

Yes — drop as many files as you like into the tool and they are converted in one batch. When more than one file comes out, everything is bundled into a ZIP for a single download.
