DAE to STL Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
STL is what 3D printers and slicing software (Cura, PrusaSlicer) expect — the final step before printing. If your files are still in DAE format, this page is the shortcut: Collada (DAE) is the old XML-based 3D interchange format from Sony/Khronos — still what SketchUp exports and countless asset stores hand out. Meshes, hierarchies and materials, but heavyweight XML.
This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.
How DAE compares to STL
| DAE | STL | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | XML scene graph | Triangle mesh only |
| Materials | Phong/lambert profiles | None |
| Compatibility | SketchUp, Blender, asset stores | All slicers and CAD |
| Best for | Legacy 3D interchange | 3D printing |

About the DAE format
Collada (DAE) was the Khronos Group's first attempt at a universal 3D interchange format — an XML schema carrying meshes, scene hierarchies, materials and even skinning. SketchUp's default export, countless asset stores and older game pipelines all speak it.
Its XML verbosity is why the industry moved to glTF: a DAE can weigh ten times its GLB equivalent. Converting to GLB shrinks it for the web, OBJ/STL strip it to raw geometry for editing or printing.
+ Strengths
- ✓Widely exported by DCC tools and asset stores
- ✓Complete scene semantics in XML
- ✓Human-readable structure
! Limitations
- −Verbose XML — large files, slow parsing
- −Superseded by glTF for web delivery
- −Material definitions vary between exporters
About the STL format
STL (STereoLithography, 3D Systems, 1987) is the format 3D printing was built on. It stores exactly one thing: a mesh of triangles with normal vectors — no color, no texture, no units, no hierarchy. Slicers assume millimeters and treat the surface as the whole truth, which is all a printer ever needs.
That minimalism cuts both ways. Every slicer and CAD tool on earth reads STL, and files are simple to repair and check (watertightness, manifold edges). But smooth curved surfaces need thousands of triangles, so STL files bloat quickly, and any appearance data is lost the moment you convert to it.
+ Strengths
- ✓Universal in 3D printing — every slicer reads it
- ✓Dead-simple geometry, easy to validate and repair
- ✓Binary variant is compact for its content
! Limitations
- −No color, materials or texture whatsoever
- −No units — slicers assume millimeters
- −Curved surfaces need huge triangle counts
Why convert DAE to STL?
Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Verbose XML — large files, slow parsing STL works differently: Universal in 3D printing — every slicer reads it If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this DAE to STL converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
What happens to colors and materials?
The STL format only stores geometry, so colors, textures and materials from the source file are dropped — the shape converts perfectly, appearance does not. If you need materials, convert to GLB instead.
How large can the DAE file be?
Everything runs on your device, so memory is the only ceiling. Dense meshes with millions of triangles convert fine on a desktop computer, just over a slightly longer coffee break.
Does the scale or orientation of the model change?
Vertex data is converted as-is. Formats without a unit system (like STL) are interpreted as millimeters by most 3D-printing tools — scale before converting if your model uses different units.
