DV to 3G2 Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
DV is the tape-era MiniDV camcorder format — standard-definition interlaced footage from the 1990s and 2000s. Converting 3G2 to MP4 rescues old phone videos for modern screens.
iLoveConverter processes everything locally on your computer, which makes it private and fast: no upload wait, no server storage, no limits. Add as many files as you like — batch conversion is built in.
How DV compares to 3G2
| DV | 3G2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | DV intra-frame (25–50 Mbps) | H.263 / baseline H.264 |
| Quality | SD, tape-faithful | Low resolution |
| Compatibility | Legacy editors | Legacy CDMA phones |
| Best for | Digitised MiniDV tapes | Old mobile clips |

About the DV format
DV is the format of the MiniDV tape era: fixed 25 Mbps (or 50 Mbps for DVCPRO) intra-frame compression, interlaced standard definition, and timecode — designed so camcorders could write frames to tape as fast as they arrived. FireWire transfers produced raw .dv files that edit suites cut natively.
Digitising old tapes produces DV files that modern software increasingly cannot open. Converting to MP4 (deinterlacing is handled by the re-encode) keeps decades of family footage playable — at a fraction of the 13 GB/hour the original consumes.
+ Strengths
- ✓Frame-accurate, timecoded archive of the tape era
- ✓High bitrate for standard definition
! Limitations
- −Enormous files (~13 GB/hour)
- −Interlaced; needs modern re-encoding anyway
About the 3G2 format
3G2 is the 3GPP2 variant of the mobile video format family, born on CDMA networks (Verizon, KDDI) where 3GP ruled GSM sides. Structurally it is a cousin of MP4 carrying H.263 or H.264 baseline video with QCELP/EVRC or AMR audio.
It shares 3GP's fate: low-resolution clips trapped on old phones. Conversion to MP4 is lossless in spirit — the pixels simply move into a container every modern device accepts.
+ Strengths
- ✓Tiny files for its era
- ✓Structurally close to MP4 — clean conversions
! Limitations
- −Low resolution and quality ceiling
- −Obsolete outside old CDMA phones
Why convert DV to 3G2?
Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Enormous files (~13 GB/hour) 3G2 works differently: Tiny files for its era If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this DV to 3G2 converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Is there a file size limit for DV to 3G2?
The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.
Will the audio track be kept?
Yes. The audio is carried over and re-encoded to the standard audio codec of 3G2, staying in sync with the video. If your DV file has multiple audio tracks, the first one is used.
Does converting DV to 3G2 re-encode my video?
Yes. The video is decoded and re-encoded with the settings chosen by the quality slider, which is what allows the format and size to change. For an archival copy, keep higher quality; for sharing, lower quality gives a much smaller file.
