About the F4B format
M4B is M4A wearing an audiobook badge: the same AAC audio in an MP4 container, plus chapter markers that Apple Books and Audible apps render as a scrubbing timeline. Buy an audiobook outside Audible and it likely arrives as M4B.
The format is deliberately chained to Apple's book ecosystem. Converting M4B to MP3 sets the book free: car stereos, gym players, old iPods and every app without chapter support will play it — though the chapter marks themselves are flattened away.

About the PCM format
Raw PCM is audio at its most naked: 16-bit little-endian samples, no header, no metadata, no sample-rate label — just the waveform bytes. It is the lowest common denominator every DSP pipeline, telephony stack and embedded system speaks, which is why exports and lab tools keep asking for it.
Because the file carries no sample-rate information, consumers must agree on the rate out of band (8000 Hz telephony and 48000 Hz video are the common conventions). Wrapping PCM into WAV adds the missing header and makes the bytes playable anywhere.
