100% private — files never leave your device

MKV is ideal for archiving movies with multiple audio tracks and subtitles intact. If your files are still in F4V format, this page is the shortcut: F4V is Adobe Flash Player's later H.264-based video container — same essence as MP4, delivered through the Flash era.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the F4V format

F4V is Adobe's later Flash Video container, introduced when Flash Player gained H.264 support around 2007. Internally it is an ISO-base-media file — the same family as MP4 — so an F4V is essentially an MP4 with a different extension and Flash-era metadata.

Conversion to MP4 is a container change, not a re-encode: the H.264 video and AAC audio pass through intact. That makes F4V→MP4 one of the cleanest conversions in the whole format zoo — quality is byte-identical.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Modern H.264/AAC inside
  • ✓Converts to MP4 without quality loss

! Limitations

  • −Dead ecosystem (Flash ended in 2020)
  • −Some players dislike the extension

About the MKV format

MKV (Matroska) is the open container that refuses to say no: virtually any video codec, multiple audio tracks, multiple subtitle streams, chapters, attachments and menu structure in one file. It became the de facto standard for movie rips, anime releases and personal archives precisely because nothing needs to be thrown away.

The same generosity is its compatibility risk: smart players (VLC, mpv) handle everything, but smart TVs, consoles and car systems choke on exotic codec combinations inside MKV. It is also not a streaming standard, so web delivery runs through its subset, WebM.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Unlimited tracks: audio, subtitles, chapters, attachments
  • ✓Open specification, no licensing
  • ✓Ideal archival container — nothing is lost

! Limitations

  • −Device playback is hit-or-miss outside smart players
  • −Not web/streaming native

Why convert F4V to MKV?

Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Dead ecosystem (Flash ended in 2020) MKV works differently: Unlimited tracks: audio, subtitles, chapters, attachments If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this F4V to MKV converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for F4V to MKV?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Why is video conversion slower than image conversion?

Every frame has to be decoded and re-encoded. This site runs that work on your own CPU via WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, but a multi-minute video reasonably takes a few minutes. Images, by comparison, are single-frame jobs.

Does converting F4V to MKV re-encode my video?

Yes. The video is decoded and re-encoded with the settings chosen by the quality slider, which is what allows the format and size to change. For an archival copy, keep higher quality; for sharing, lower quality gives a much smaller file.
