EOT File Format

Embedded OpenType category

EOT is Microsoft's web font format for IE4-IE8 — a TTF wrapped in a header with embedding permissions. The raw TTF rides at the tail of the file.

Typical use: Extract the TTF from EOT web fonts for modern @font-face usage.

About the EOT format

EOT (Embedded OpenType) is Microsoft's answer to web fonts from 1997: a TTF wrapped in a header carrying embedding permissions, root-string domain locks and a URI table — designed so foundries could license fonts for the web without giving away the raw file. IE4 through IE8 required it.

The actual sfnt rides unchanged at the tail of the file, so extraction is a pure slice: read FontDataSize from the header, take that many bytes from the end, and you have a TTF every modern browser accepts.

Strengths

  • ✓ Carries embedding-permission metadata
  • ✓ Lossless TTF recovery from the tail
  • ✓ Required reading for legacy IE archives

Limitations

  • ✗ Dead format — no modern browser loads it
  • ✗ Header variants (compression flags) exist
  • ✗ Root-string locks are trivially stripped
Structure
EOT header + raw sfnt tail
Types / schema
Binary wrapper
Compatibility
IE4-8 only; extract for everything else

Rescuing fonts from legacy web archives
