OGV File Format

Ogg Video category

OGV is the open-source Ogg video container (Theora) from early HTML5 video days — rare today but still produced by some Linux tools.

Typical use: OGV recordings convert to MP4 or WEBM for playback anywhere without codec packs.

About the OGV format

OGV is video in the Ogg container, historically paired with the Xiph Foundation's Theora codec. Around 2004–2010 it was the royalty-free answer to patent-encumbered H.264, pushed by Firefox and Wikipedia. Theora's compression has since been left far behind by VP9, AV1 and even H.264, and OGV files in the wild are almost exclusively period pieces.

If you encounter one, it decodes in VLC and Firefox-derived stacks fine; converting to MP4 or WebM brings it into the modern era with a quality-neutral remux/re-encode.
