PLY (Polygon File Format) stores meshes and 3D scans with per-vertex color data — the standard output of photogrammetry and depth scanners.
Typical use: Scanner exports usually arrive as PLY; converting to STL makes them printable.
About the PLY format
PLY (Stanford Polygon File Format) grew out of the Stanford scanning projects of the 1990s and became the standard output of 3D scanners and photogrammetry. Its superpower is custom vertex properties: beyond x/y/z and faces, a PLY can attach color, normals, confidence and scanner-specific channels to every point — which is why point clouds live in it.
It handles meshes too (binary or ASCII), but rendering ecosystems care little for it — no PBR materials, no hierarchy, no animation. Typical workflow: scan or photogrammetry outputs PLY, you clean it, then convert to GLB/OBJ for visualization or STL for printing.
Strengths
- ✓ Standard of scanning and photogrammetry
- ✓ Custom per-vertex attributes (color, normals, confidence)
- ✓ Handles dense point clouds efficiently
Limitations
- ✗ No materials, hierarchy or animation
- ✗ Sparse support in viewers and engines
- Structure
- Point cloud or mesh
- Materials
- Vertex colors only
- Compatibility
- Scanning/scientific stacks
- Best for
- Scans and point clouds

Frequently asked questions
What is a PLY file?
PLY (Polygon File Format) stores meshes and 3D scans with per-vertex color data — the standard output of photogrammetry and depth scanners.
How do I convert PLY files online?
Pick a target format from the "Convert PLY to…" list below, drop your file and hit convert. Everything runs in your browser — no install, no upload, no watermark, no limits.
Is it safe to convert PLY files here?
Yes. Every conversion is performed by your own device inside the browser — files never leave for a server, and the page keeps working even offline.
