LZ4 to WIM Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
Extracting WIM to ZIP exposes the files inside Windows images without deployment tools. If your files are still in LZ4 format, this page is the shortcut: LZ4 is the speed king of compression — hundreds of MB/s on commodity hardware, the default for kernel initramfs images and big-data pipelines.
This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.
How to convert LZ4 to WIM

About the LZ4 format
LZ4 trades compression ratio for near-memcpy speed: hundreds of megabytes per second in both directions, which is why initramfs images, database WALs and big-data shuffles default to it. It is the format you choose when decompression must never be the bottleneck.
7-Zip reads .lz4 natively (tar.lz4 bundles unwrap to a full tar), making browser-side repackaging into zip or tar a one-click affair.
+ Strengths
- ✓Fastest mainstream decompression
- ✓Frame format carries content size/checksums
- ✓Default in kernels and data platforms
! Limitations
- −Large files compared to xz/zstd
- −Legacy block format vs frame format confusion
- −Not everyone's archive tool supports it
About the WIM format
WIM (Windows Imaging Format) is how Microsoft ships Windows itself: the install media and deployment images are WIM files, holding a complete filesystem snapshot with single-instancing (identical files stored once). It is Windows' answer to tar — file-based rather than sector-based.
Opening one without deployment tooling (DISM, 7-Zip on Windows) is awkward. Extracting WIM to ZIP exposes the files inside — drivers, scripts, provisioned apps — on any system, no Windows required.
+ Strengths
- ✓Windows' native image format
- ✓Single-instancing deduplicates identical files
! Limitations
- −Opaque without Microsoft tooling
- −Files inside may be Windows-locked
Why convert LZ4 to WIM?
Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Large files compared to xz/zstd WIM works differently: Windows' native image format If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this LZ4 to WIM converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Is there a file size limit for LZ4 to WIM?
The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.
Are the files inside my LZ4 archive modified?
No. Contents are unpacked in memory and repacked into WIM byte-for-byte — the conversion changes the container, never the files inside it.
What about folders and directory structure?
The full directory tree is preserved: folders stay folders, and deep paths arrive exactly as they were packed in the LZ4 file.
