M4V 7Z
100% private — files never leave your device

7Z is ideal for big archives you store or share with power users; convert to ZIP when the recipient just needs to double-click. If your files are still in M4V format, this page is the shortcut: M4V is Apple’s iTunes video format — essentially MP4 that may carry FairPlay DRM, which is why non-Apple players sometimes reject it.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the M4V format

M4V is Apple's variant of MP4, distinguished by an optional DRM layer (FairPlay) used by iTunes movie purchases, plus chapter flags. A DRM-free M4V is byte-for-byte the same beast as MP4 — rename the extension and most players never notice. Apple TV, iTunes and QuickTime treat it as first-class.

Outside Apple's world it buys you nothing: DRM-protected files are locked to authorized devices by design, and non-protected ones are just MP4. Converting M4V to MP4 is only meaningful to drop the extension or to strip DRM you are entitled to remove in your own jurisdiction — DRM-locked store purchases remain locked.

+Strengths

  • ✓Native to iTunes/Apple TV/QuickTime
  • ✓Chapters and metadata for video series
  • ✓DRM-free files equal MP4 in every way

!Limitations

  • −Store purchases are DRM-locked to Apple devices
  • −Redundant with MP4 outside Apple ecosystems

About the 7Z format

7Z is the native format of Igor Pavlov's 7-Zip (1999), built around LZMA/LZMA2 compression — for years the ratio king against ZIP and RAR — with AES-256 encryption, solid archiving (similar files compress as one stream) and open, unpatented specifications. A 7Z of the same photos or code is routinely 20–40% smaller than its ZIP.

The trade-off is platform defaults: Windows Explorer and macOS Archive Utility do not open 7Z without third-party tools (7-Zip, PeaZip, Keka). It is the format for maximizing compression on your own terms, and for encrypted archives done properly (header encryption included).

+Strengths

  • ✓Top-tier compression ratio (LZMA2)
  • ✓Real AES-256 encryption, optional header encryption
  • ✓Open format, free tooling everywhere

!Limitations

  • −No native OS support — recipients need tools
  • −Solid mode makes single-file extraction costly

Frequently asked questions

Is this M4V to 7Z converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for M4V to 7Z?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Why is video conversion slower than image conversion?

Every frame has to be decoded and re-encoded. This site runs that work on your own CPU via WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, but a multi-minute video reasonably takes a few minutes. Images, by comparison, are single-frame jobs.

Does converting M4V to 7Z re-encode my video?

Yes. The video is decoded and re-encoded with the settings chosen by the quality slider, which is what allows the format and size to change. For an archival copy, keep higher quality; for sharing, lower quality gives a much smaller file.
