Markdown to RTF Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
Markdown (long name) and Rich Text Format exist for different jobs: The .markdown extension is simply Markdown with its full name — identical syntax, identical tools, a spelling some editors and wikis hand out by default. Convert to RTF when the recipient's toolchain is ancient, locked-down or unknown — it is the lowest-common-denominator rich text that opens anywhere.
Because the whole conversion happens on your device, it is instant, unlimited and genuinely private — no accounts, no watermarks, no files on anyone's server. Multiple files are converted in one go.

About the Markdown format
Markdown (John Gruber, 2004) is plain text that renders into rich documents: `#` headings, `*` emphasis, lists, links, code fences. You can write it in any editor, read it as-is, diff it in git, and twenty years later it still opens — which is why GitHub, Stack Overflow, Notion, Obsidian and every static-site generator settled on it for prose.
Its one honest weakness is dialect fragmentation: tables, footnotes and task lists all started as extensions (GFM, MultiMarkdown, Pandoc), so a sophisticated document can render differently across tools. Core Markdown — headings, lists, links, code — is bulletproof everywhere.
+ Strengths
- ✓Future-proof plain text, renders anywhere
- ✓Perfect for version control and documentation
- ✓Low-friction: readable even unrendered
! Limitations
- −Extension dialects fragment advanced features
- −Complex layout and precise design are out of scope
About the RTF format
RTF is Microsoft's 1987 rich-text format, and it refuses to die for a good reason: the file is plain ASCII with readable backslash commands, so any program ever written can open it. WordPad, Word, TextEdit, LibreOffice, ancient mainframe editors — RTF is the lowest common denominator of formatted text.
It carries bold, italics, fonts, colors, tables and images, but its layout fidelity is modest by design — think "formatted text", not "typeset page". That makes RTF the right target when the recipient's toolchain is unknown, ancient or locked down: it opens everywhere and keeps the formatting that matters.
+ Strengths
- ✓Opens in literally every word processor
- ✓Plain-text based — never corrupted by email or old systems
- ✓Keeps bold/italic/tables/images without a full office suite
! Limitations
- −No templates, macros or document automation
- −Layout fidelity far below DOCX/PDF
- −Verbose encoding makes files larger than DOCX

Frequently asked questions
Is this Markdown to RTF converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Is there a file size limit for Markdown to RTF?
The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.
Will the layout of my Markdown file be preserved exactly?
This converter renders your Markdown content into RTF with pages, proportions and images kept as close to the original as the target format allows. Use the preview before downloading to confirm it looks the way you expect.
Can I edit the RTF result afterwards?
That depends on the target: RTF is designed for what it does, and this converter reproduces its content faithfully rather than inventing editable structure. For heavy re-editing, work from a format built for editing and export the final version here.
