MP4 to JPEG Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
MP4 (H.264) is the universal video format: every phone records it, every browser, TV, editor and chat app plays it. Convert to or from JPEG when a tool or form specifically asks for the .jpeg extension — the pixels and compression behave exactly like JPG.
iLoveConverter processes everything locally on your computer, which makes it private and fast: no upload wait, no server storage, no limits. Add as many files as you like — batch conversion is built in.

About the MP4 format
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the universal delivery container of digital video. It wraps H.264, HEVC or AV1 video with AAC audio, and its structure — separate metadata (moov) and media atoms — is what makes streaming, seeking and fast-start playback possible. Phones, cameras, TVs, browsers and every social platform assume MP4 first.
Quality is entirely a function of the codec and bitrate chosen at encode time, so an MP4 can be a 10 Mbps HEVC master or a postage stamp. That flexibility plus total playback coverage is why nothing has displaced it in twenty years — conversion between formats almost always ends in MP4.
+ Strengths
- ✓Plays on every device and platform in existence
- ✓Streaming-ready structure (fast start, seeking)
- ✓Choice of modern codecs: H.264, HEVC, AV1
! Limitations
- −Quality depends entirely on encode settings
- −HEVC variants hit licensing gaps on some platforms
About the JPEG format
JPG (short for JPEG, the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee that standardized it in 1992) has been the default photo format for over three decades. It compresses photographs using the discrete cosine transform: the image is split into 8×8 blocks, and details the human eye is bad at noticing are discarded. The result is files many times smaller than uncompressed data, at a quality level you control when saving.
In practice JPG is unbeatable for photographs and smooth gradients — camera memory cards, messaging apps and the web all assume it. It is a poor fit for screenshots, logos or anything with sharp edges and flat color, where compression leaves visible ringing around text. There is no transparency support, color depth is capped at 8 bits per channel, and every re-save with compression compounds tiny generational losses.
+ Strengths
- ✓Opens on literally every device, app and browser made in the last 30 years
- ✓Compresses photos dramatically — typically 10:1 or better with little visible loss
- ✓Quality level is adjustable, so you can trade fidelity for file size
- ✓Mature ecosystem: EXIF metadata, ICC profiles and progressive loading all supported
! Limitations
- −Lossy — artifacts appear on text, sharp edges and flat areas
- −No transparency, so overlays and logos need PNG or WebP instead
- −Repeated re-saving at low quality permanently degrades the image
Why convert MP4 to JPEG?
Converting makes sense where the strengths of JPEG meet what MP4 cannot give you. Opens on literally every device, app and browser made in the last 30 years Meanwhile Quality depends entirely on encode settings One pass through the converter above puts your file on the right side of that trade-off.
Frequently asked questions
Is this MP4 to JPEG converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Will converting MP4 to JPEG reduce quality?
JPEG uses lossy compression, so a small amount of recompression is unavoidable. The quality slider lets you choose between maximum fidelity and smallest file size — the default is visually indistinguishable for photos.
Why is video conversion slower than image conversion?
Every frame has to be decoded and re-encoded. This site runs that work on your own CPU via WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, but a multi-minute video reasonably takes a few minutes. Images, by comparison, are single-frame jobs.
Will the audio track be kept?
Yes. The audio is carried over and re-encoded to the standard audio codec of JPEG, staying in sync with the video. If your MP4 file has multiple audio tracks, the first one is used.
