Muse DOTX
100% private — files never leave your device

Emacs Muse Markup and Word Template (OOXML) exist for different jobs: Muse is the minimal markup of Emacs Muse and Zim wiki — headings with asterisks, emphasis with underscores — designed for note-taking that stays readable for decades. Convert DOTX templates to PDF for review or into filled documents.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the Muse format

Muse is the quietest markup in this list: an Emacs mode from the early 2000s (later adopted by the Zim desktop wiki) whose headings are leading asterisks, emphasis is underscore-wrapped, and that is most of the grammar. It was designed for personal notebooks that should still open cleanly in fifty years.

Muse files rarely hold anything more exotic than headings, lists and paragraphs, which makes conversion nearly lossless: Pandoc maps the small grammar onto Markdown, HTML or Word one-to-one. The only real work is deciding where the notes go next.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Extremely simple grammar — near-lossless conversion
  • ✓Future-proof plain text
  • ✓Native to Emacs Muse and Zim wiki users

! Limitations

  • −Tiny ecosystem outside Emacs
  • −No tables or footnotes worth mentioning
  • −Effectively unmaintained as a format

About the DOTX format

DOCX is the modern Microsoft Word format (Office Open XML, default since Word 2007). A file is actually a ZIP package of XML parts — document body, styles, numbering, headers, embedded media — which is what lets Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, WPS and Pages all open it natively. Text flows around styles rather than absolute positions, so a document adapts to the page it is rendered on.

It is the format of collaboration: tracked changes, comments, styles and templates are first-class citizens, and office ecosystems assume it. The trade-off is layout drift — the same DOCX paginates slightly differently across renderers, and very complex layouts (exact positioning, text over images) can shift. For contracts in progress it is ideal; for the signed final, export a PDF.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Fully editable with styles, track changes and comments
  • ✓Opens natively in Word, Google Docs, WPS, LibreOffice
  • ✓Flowing layout adapts to any page size

! Limitations

  • −Pagination and layout shift between renderers
  • −Complex layouts may not survive round-trips
  • −Not suitable as a final, fixed distribution format

Why convert Muse to DOTX?

Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Tiny ecosystem outside Emacs DOTX works differently: Fully editable with styles, track changes and comments If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Muse to DOTX converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for Muse to DOTX?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Can I edit the DOTX result afterwards?

That depends on the target: DOTX is designed for what it does, and this converter reproduces its content faithfully rather than inventing editable structure. For heavy re-editing, work from a format built for editing and export the final version here.

Will the layout of my Muse file be preserved exactly?

This converter renders your Muse content into DOTX with pages, proportions and images kept as close to the original as the target format allows. Use the preview before downloading to confirm it looks the way you expect.
