Muse MD
100% private — files never leave your device

Muse is the minimal markup of Emacs Muse and Zim wiki — headings with asterisks, emphasis with underscores — designed for note-taking that stays readable for decades. Markdown is the fastest way to write formatted text that stays readable as-is and converts cleanly to HTML.

Because the whole conversion happens on your device, it is instant, unlimited and genuinely private — no accounts, no watermarks, no files on anyone's server. Multiple files are converted in one go.

About the Muse format

Muse is the quietest markup in this list: an Emacs mode from the early 2000s (later adopted by the Zim desktop wiki) whose headings are leading asterisks, emphasis is underscore-wrapped, and that is most of the grammar. It was designed for personal notebooks that should still open cleanly in fifty years.

Muse files rarely hold anything more exotic than headings, lists and paragraphs, which makes conversion nearly lossless: Pandoc maps the small grammar onto Markdown, HTML or Word one-to-one. The only real work is deciding where the notes go next.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Extremely simple grammar — near-lossless conversion
  • ✓Future-proof plain text
  • ✓Native to Emacs Muse and Zim wiki users

! Limitations

  • −Tiny ecosystem outside Emacs
  • −No tables or footnotes worth mentioning
  • −Effectively unmaintained as a format

About the MD format

Markdown (John Gruber, 2004) is plain text that renders into rich documents: `#` headings, `*` emphasis, lists, links, code fences. You can write it in any editor, read it as-is, diff it in git, and twenty years later it still opens — which is why GitHub, Stack Overflow, Notion, Obsidian and every static-site generator settled on it for prose.

Its one honest weakness is dialect fragmentation: tables, footnotes and task lists all started as extensions (GFM, MultiMarkdown, Pandoc), so a sophisticated document can render differently across tools. Core Markdown — headings, lists, links, code — is bulletproof everywhere.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Future-proof plain text, renders anywhere
  • ✓Perfect for version control and documentation
  • ✓Low-friction: readable even unrendered

! Limitations

  • −Extension dialects fragment advanced features
  • −Complex layout and precise design are out of scope

Why convert Muse to MD?

Converting makes sense where the strengths of MD meet what Muse cannot give you. Future-proof plain text, renders anywhere Meanwhile Tiny ecosystem outside Emacs One pass through the converter above puts your file on the right side of that trade-off.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Muse to MD converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for Muse to MD?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Can I edit the MD result afterwards?

That depends on the target: MD is designed for what it does, and this converter reproduces its content faithfully rather than inventing editable structure. For heavy re-editing, work from a format built for editing and export the final version here.

Will the layout of my Muse file be preserved exactly?

This converter renders your Muse content into MD with pages, proportions and images kept as close to the original as the target format allows. Use the preview before downloading to confirm it looks the way you expect.
