PBM TXZ
100% private — files never leave your device

Convert TXZ exactly like TAR.XZ. If your files are still in PBM format, this page is the shortcut: PBM is the 1-bit member of the netpbm family: pure black and white, stored as readable ASCII or packed bits. It is the simplest image format that still counts as one — which is why half a century of tools can read it.

iLoveConverter processes everything locally on your computer, which makes it private and fast: no upload wait, no server storage, no limits. Add as many files as you like — batch conversion is built in.

About the PBM format

PBM is the 1-bit extreme of the netpbm family: every pixel is a single bit, black or white, stored as ASCII digits or packed bytes. Born as part of Jef Poskanzer's Pbmplus toolkit in 1988, it remains the zero-ambition format of choice for fax pipelines, print queues and anything that must never break.

There is nothing inside a PBM to lose: converting to PNG or JPG is a pure expansion, and converting black-and-white art back down to PBM is the standard way to feed old print systems.

+Strengths

  • ✓Trivially parseable — the entire spec fits in a paragraph
  • ✓Perfect for 1-bit print and fax pipelines
  • ✓Zero patents, zero compression surprises

!Limitations

  • −Black and white only — no gray, no color
  • −ASCII variant is enormous
  • −No alpha channel

About the TXZ format

TAR.XZ pairs the tar container with XZ (LZMA2) compression — the highest-ratio member of the tar family and the de-facto release format of modern Linux distributions. The same source tree that lands 5% smaller than TAR.BZ2 and 20% smaller than TAR.GZ is why kernel.org and GNU mirrors standardised on it.

The trade is CPU time: XZ compresses slow (dictionary sizes up to 64 MB) but decompresses fast, which makes it ideal for one-time releases that get downloaded millions of times. When you need speed instead, TAR.GZ or TAR.ZSTD are the neighbouring picks.

+Strengths

  • ✓Best compression ratio of the tar family
  • ✓Standard release artifact of Linux distros
  • ✓Fast decompression despite slow compression

!Limitations

  • −Compression is CPU-heavy and single-threaded by default
  • −Larger toolchain footprint than gzip on tiny systems

Why convert PBM to TXZ?

Converting makes sense where the strengths of TXZ meet what PBM cannot give you. Best compression ratio of the tar family Meanwhile Black and white only — no gray, no color One pass through the converter above puts your file on the right side of that trade-off.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PBM to TXZ converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Will I lose quality converting PBM to TXZ?

No — TXZ is a lossless format, so every pixel of the converted image matches your original PBM file. You can also adjust the quality/size balance before converting when the target format supports compression.

Will transparent areas survive the conversion to TXZ?

Transparency is kept whenever TXZ actually supports an alpha channel. If the target format has none (like JPG), transparent areas are flattened onto a white background — that is a property of the format, not of this tool.

Can I convert several PBM files at once?

Yes — drop as many files as you like into the tool and they are converted in one batch. When more than one file comes out, everything is bundled into a ZIP for a single download.
