RIS to DOTX Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
Convert DOTX templates to PDF for review or into filled documents. If your files are still in RIS format, this page is the shortcut: RIS is the tagged bibliographic format every reference manager imports and exports — TY lines, AU authors, ER terminators. Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote all speak it.
This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the RIS format
RIS is the tagged bibliography format that became the lingua franca of reference management: two-letter tags (TY for type, AU for author, ER for end) describe one citation per block. Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote all import and export it.
Converting RIS to JSON turns citations into data your scripts can query — de-duplicate libraries, merge collections or feed custom review tooling without a reference manager in the loop.
+Strengths
- ✓Universal in reference managers
- ✓Simple line-tagged format
!Limitations
- −Only one record type per block
- −Field mapping varies by vendor
About the DOTX format
DOCX is the modern Microsoft Word format (Office Open XML, default since Word 2007). A file is actually a ZIP package of XML parts — document body, styles, numbering, headers, embedded media — which is what lets Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, WPS and Pages all open it natively. Text flows around styles rather than absolute positions, so a document adapts to the page it is rendered on.
It is the format of collaboration: tracked changes, comments, styles and templates are first-class citizens, and office ecosystems assume it. The trade-off is layout drift — the same DOCX paginates slightly differently across renderers, and very complex layouts (exact positioning, text over images) can shift. For contracts in progress it is ideal; for the signed final, export a PDF.
+Strengths
- ✓Fully editable with styles, track changes and comments
- ✓Opens natively in Word, Google Docs, WPS, LibreOffice
- ✓Flowing layout adapts to any page size
!Limitations
- −Pagination and layout shift between renderers
- −Complex layouts may not survive round-trips
- −Not suitable as a final, fixed distribution format
Why convert RIS to DOTX?
Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Only one record type per block DOTX works differently: Fully editable with styles, track changes and comments If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this RIS to DOTX converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Is there a file size limit for RIS to DOTX?
The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.
Can I edit the DOTX result afterwards?
That depends on the target: DOTX is designed for what it does, and this converter reproduces its content faithfully rather than inventing editable structure. For heavy re-editing, work from a format built for editing and export the final version here.
Will the layout of my RIS file be preserved exactly?
This converter renders your RIS content into DOTX with pages, proportions and images kept as close to the original as the target format allows. Use the preview before downloading to confirm it looks the way you expect.
