RTF EPUB
100% private — files never leave your device

EPUB readers follow you everywhere, but the content is locked in the container — extracting it as text, HTML or a simple PDF unlocks copy, search and printing. If your files are still in RTF format, this page is the shortcut: RTF (Rich Text Format) is Microsoft's 1987 legacy rich-text format: plain ASCII with backslash escapes, understood by literally every word processor ever shipped — WordPad, Word, Pages, LibreOffice, even mainframe-era editors.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the RTF format

RTF is Microsoft's 1987 rich-text format, and it refuses to die for a good reason: the file is plain ASCII with readable backslash commands, so any program ever written can open it. WordPad, Word, TextEdit, LibreOffice, ancient mainframe editors — RTF is the lowest common denominator of formatted text.

It carries bold, italics, fonts, colors, tables and images, but its layout fidelity is modest by design — think "formatted text", not "typeset page". That makes RTF the right target when the recipient's toolchain is unknown, ancient or locked down: it opens everywhere and keeps the formatting that matters.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Opens in literally every word processor
  • ✓Plain-text based — never corrupted by email or old systems
  • ✓Keeps bold/italic/tables/images without a full office suite

! Limitations

  • −No templates, macros or document automation
  • −Layout fidelity far below DOCX/PDF
  • −Verbose encoding makes files larger than DOCX

About the EPUB format

EPUB is the open standard of e-books (IDPF, now W3C): a ZIP package of XHTML chapters, CSS styling and metadata, rendered reflowably on any screen size. Text re-wraps to your phone, your e-reader and your monitor; font size, margins and typography belong to the reader, not the publisher. EPUB3 adds fixed-layout support, media overlays (read-aloud) and rich semantics.

It is the universal format of every ebook platform except Kindle (Amazon accepts EPUB uploads since 2022 but converts internally). DRM is optional — many EPUBs are open, library books use Adobe ADE encryption. For text-centric books it is the right long-term choice; heavily designed print layouts survive conversion imperfectly.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Reflows to any screen — the point of e-books
  • ✓Open standard, future-proof, tool-rich
  • ✓Accepted by every store and reader app

! Limitations

  • −Kindle devices still need conversion to Kindle formats
  • −Complex print layouts translate imperfectly
  • −DRM variants need specific readers

Frequently asked questions

Is this RTF to EPUB converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for RTF to EPUB?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Will the layout of my RTF file be preserved exactly?

This converter renders your RTF content into EPUB with pages, proportions and images kept as close to the original as the target format allows. Use the preview before downloading to confirm it looks the way you expect.

Can I edit the EPUB result afterwards?

That depends on the target: EPUB is designed for what it does, and this converter reproduces its content faithfully rather than inventing editable structure. For heavy re-editing, work from a format built for editing and export the final version here.
