CSV Transpose
100% private — files never leave your device

Data exported sideways — series as rows when your chart tool wants columns, or a wide survey dump that reads better flipped — is fixed in one click. The first row becomes the first column, every row becomes a column, and empty cells in the new header row get auto-generated column names.

Duplicate header names after flipping are de-duplicated with .2/.3 suffixes, so the output always opens cleanly in Excel or any CSV tool.

About the CSV format

CSV (comma-separated values) is the lowest common denominator of tabular data: one table, rows as lines, columns separated by commas, everything plain text. Excel, Google Sheets, every database importer, every data-science library and every scripting language read it, which is why it has survived fifty years of format fashion.

Its weaknesses come from the same minimalism. There are no types (everything is a string until you decide otherwise), no formulas, one table per file, and dialect quirks are legendary: comma vs semicolon locales, quoting rules, and Excel's insistence on re-opening UTF-8 files without a BOM as mojibake. Clean, well-formed UTF-8 CSV with a BOM sidesteps nearly all of it.

+Strengths

  • ✓Universal: Excel, Sheets, databases and code all read it
  • ✓Human-readable and diff-friendly
  • ✓Streams well — process giant files line by line

!Limitations

  • −No types, no formulas, no multiple sheets
  • −Dialect chaos: delimiters, quoting, encoding
  • −Nested or hierarchical data does not fit

Frequently asked questions

Does transposing twice restore the original?

Yes — the flip is an exact mathematical transpose. One caveat: if your original header row had duplicate or empty names, the auto-generated names from the first pass become data on the second.

What happens to empty cells?

They keep their position (just transposed). The only fill-in happens for the new header row, where empty names would break CSV consumers.

How large a CSV can it handle?

Tens of thousands of rows process instantly in the browser; the practical limit is your device memory, not a tool cap.
