TS TGZ
100% private — files never leave your device

Convert TGZ exactly like TAR.GZ — unpack, repack or inspect. If your files are still in TS format, this page is the shortcut: TS (Transport Stream) is the broadcast recording format used by TVs, satellite receivers and some camcorders.

iLoveConverter processes everything locally on your computer, which makes it private and fast: no upload wait, no server storage, no limits. Add as many files as you like — batch conversion is built in.

About the TS format

TS (MPEG Transport Stream) is the packetized format of broadcast television — DVB, ATSC, ISDB — and of AVCHD/Blu-ray camera segments. Fixed 188-byte packets make it resilient: a damaged broadcast moment corrupts one packet, not the file. That is exactly what broadcast needs and exactly why TS wastes bytes compared to MP4.

TS plays fine in VLC and other full-featured players but not in browsers or social platforms, so camera clips and recorded broadcasts end up converted to MP4 for anything beyond local viewing.

+Strengths

  • ✓Broadcast-grade resilience to transmission errors
  • ✓Native format of TV capture and AVCHD cameras

!Limitations

  • −No web or social platform support
  • −Packet overhead inflates file size

About the TGZ format

TAR.GZ is the classic Unix distribution shape: a TAR bundle squeezed through gzip (DEFLATE-based). Every Linux package of source code, every Apache tarball, every data-science dataset arrives this way. Decompression is a pipeline — untar the gzip stream — and the format is understood everywhere Unix ideas went.

gzip compresses the whole archive as one stream, which keeps ratio decent for text-heavy trees but means reaching file #400 requires decompressing the previous 399. Modern alternatives (zstd) are faster at similar ratios, yet tar.gz remains the safest common denominator.

+Strengths

  • ✓Universally understood on Unix-like systems
  • ✓Good ratio for text and source trees
  • ✓Preserves Unix permissions via TAR

!Limitations

  • −Single stream — no random access
  • −Slower than modern zstd
  • −Two-step format (tar + gzip)

Why convert TS to TGZ?

Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. No web or social platform support TGZ works differently: Universally understood on Unix-like systems If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this TS to TGZ converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for TS to TGZ?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Why is video conversion slower than image conversion?

Every frame has to be decoded and re-encoded. This site runs that work on your own CPU via WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, but a multi-minute video reasonably takes a few minutes. Images, by comparison, are single-frame jobs.

Does converting TS to TGZ re-encode my video?

Yes. The video is decoded and re-encoded with the settings chosen by the quality slider, which is what allows the format and size to change. For an archival copy, keep higher quality; for sharing, lower quality gives a much smaller file.
