Extract Video Frames
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
Pick how many frames per second you need — one frame per second for contact sheets, 5 fps for dense sampling — and every extracted frame lands in one ZIP as a numbered PNG (frame_0001.png, frame_0002.png …).
Extraction stops at 600 frames so long videos cannot exhaust the browser. At the default 2 fps that covers 5 minutes of footage; for longer videos, trim first or pick a lower rate.
How to video to frames (ZIP)

About the MP4 format
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the universal delivery container of digital video. It wraps H.264, HEVC or AV1 video with AAC audio, and its structure — separate metadata (moov) and media atoms — is what makes streaming, seeking and fast-start playback possible. Phones, cameras, TVs, browsers and every social platform assume MP4 first.
Quality is entirely a function of the codec and bitrate chosen at encode time, so an MP4 can be a 10 Mbps HEVC master or a postage stamp. That flexibility plus total playback coverage is why nothing has displaced it in twenty years — conversion between formats almost always ends in MP4.
+Strengths
- ✓Plays on every device and platform in existence
- ✓Streaming-ready structure (fast start, seeking)
- ✓Choice of modern codecs: H.264, HEVC, AV1
!Limitations
- −Quality depends entirely on encode settings
- −HEVC variants hit licensing gaps on some platforms
About the ZIP format
ZIP (PKWARE, 1989) is the archive format the world agreed on: per-file Deflate compression (or plain store), a central directory that lets tools list and extract single files without touching the rest, and thirty-five years of universal support. Windows, macOS, Linux, phones and browsers all open ZIP natively.
Its compression ratio is middle-of-the-road next to 7z, and its encryption story is genuinely mixed: the classic ZipCrypto is broken, while AES-256 works only in tools that opted in. For maximum compatibility of everyday sharing, though, ZIP remains the only safe answer.
+Strengths
- ✓Opens natively on every platform
- ✓Random access: extract one file, skip the rest
- ✓Thirty-five years of tooling maturity
!Limitations
- −Weaker compression than 7Z/RAR
- −Classic encryption (ZipCrypto) is broken
- −No built-in recovery records
Frequently asked questions
How many frames can I extract?
Up to 600 per run — a safety cap so the browser tab never runs out of memory. At 2 fps that is 5 minutes of video.
Why PNG instead of JPG?
PNG is lossless, so re-encoding the decoded frames adds no new artifacts. The ZIP is stored uncompressed because PNG is already compressed.
Can I use the frames commercially?
The frames are your own footage — the tool only extracts what is already in the file. Rights in the content are unchanged.
