VOB M4A
100% private — files never leave your device

M4A sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, and Apple users never have compatibility worries. If your files are still in VOB format, this page is the shortcut: VOB is the container inside every DVD-Video disc. Ripping a DVD leaves you with VOB files that ordinary players handle badly.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the VOB format

VOB is the building block of DVD-Video: MPEG-2 program streams holding video, audio tracks, subtitles and menus, chopped into 1 GB chunks on the disc. Ripping a DVD means dealing with VOBs; the video inside is ordinary MPEG-2, usually with AC-3 or PCM audio.

Commercial DVDs add CSS encryption, which is both a technical and a legal matter: this site converts the unencrypted VOBs you own (home DVDs, camcorder discs), while defeating copy protection is a separate question governed by local law. Convert the VOB set to MP4 and the DVD's content becomes portable.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Faithful DVD source material
  • ✓Ordinary MPEG-2 inside — easy to convert

! Limitations

  • −Chunked 1 GB files are awkward to handle
  • −Commercial discs are CSS-encrypted
  • −Standard-definition only

About the M4A format

M4A is MPEG-4 audio: AAC (or ALAC) inside the MP4 container, minus the video. It became the iTunes Store's format in 2003 and never left — Apple Music downloads, voice memos and most phone recordings are M4A. At the same bitrate, AAC sounds distinctly better than MP3, which is why 128 kbps M4A competes with 192 kbps MP3.

Support is excellent across Apple devices, modern Android, Windows and every streaming SDK. The one historical caveat: iTunes Store music bought before 2009 carried FairPlay DRM; everything since (and everything you record yourself) is DRM-free.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate
  • ✓First-class on Apple and modern platforms
  • ✓ALAC variant covers lossless needs

! Limitations

  • −Very old feature phones and players miss it
  • −Pre-2009 store purchases may carry DRM

Why convert VOB to M4A?

Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Chunked 1 GB files are awkward to handle M4A works differently: Better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this VOB to M4A converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for VOB to M4A?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Will the audio track be kept?

Yes. The audio is carried over and re-encoded to the standard audio codec of M4A, staying in sync with the video. If your VOB file has multiple audio tracks, the first one is used.

Why is video conversion slower than image conversion?

Every frame has to be decoded and re-encoded. This site runs that work on your own CPU via WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, but a multi-minute video reasonably takes a few minutes. Images, by comparison, are single-frame jobs.
