Windows Media Video and Audio Interchange File Format exist for different jobs: WMV is Microsoft’s Windows Media video format, still found in old recordings, webinars and screen captures. AIFF imports cleanly into Logic Pro and older Mac audio tooling.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

About the WMV format

WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's codec family, most commonly WMV3/VC-1 inside an ASF container. In its Silverlight-era heyday it delivered good quality at dial-up-to-DSL bitrates and DRM for Windows Media services. Today it survives mainly in corporate archives, old training videos and PowerPoint embeds from the 2000s.

Non-Windows playback was always its weakness and remains so: macOS and Linux need workarounds, phones and web platforms ignore it. Converting WMV to MP4 is the standard exit, and usually saves space at the same time.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Good quality-per-bit for its era
  • ✓Native Windows Media integration

! Limitations

  • −Poor non-Windows and mobile support
  • −Obsolete next to H.264
  • −DRM variants are device-locked

About the AIFF format

AIFF is Apple's counterpart to WAV: uncompressed PCM in an IFF container, born with the classic Mac in 1988. It stores the same bit-perfect audio as WAV but carries metadata far better — iTunes-era tags, cover art and loop points all fit natively, which made it the default of Logic Pro and Mac-based audio production.

Functionally the WAV-versus-AIFF choice is platform history: same quality, same sizes, AIFF friendlier on Mac, WAV friendlier everywhere else. Converting between them is a lossless retagging exercise, nothing more.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Bit-perfect uncompressed audio
  • ✓Better metadata support than WAV
  • ✓Native to macOS and Logic Pro

! Limitations

  • −Same bulk as WAV (~10 MB/minute)
  • −Windows tooling historically prefers WAV

Why convert WMV to AIFF?

Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Poor non-Windows and mobile support AIFF works differently: Bit-perfect uncompressed audio If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this WMV to AIFF converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for WMV to AIFF?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Will the audio track be kept?

Yes. The audio is carried over and re-encoded to the standard audio codec of AIFF, staying in sync with the video. If your WMV file has multiple audio tracks, the first one is used.

Does converting WMV to AIFF re-encode my video?

Yes. The video is decoded and re-encoded with the settings chosen by the quality slider, which is what allows the format and size to change. For an archival copy, keep higher quality; for sharing, lower quality gives a much smaller file.
