XML to CBOR Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
Decode CBOR to JSON to inspect what a device or token actually sent. If your files are still in XML format, this page is the shortcut: XML is the veteran structured-data format: self-describing tags wrapping values, still the backbone of sitemaps, config files and many enterprise systems.
This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.
How XML compares to CBOR
| XML | CBOR | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Trees with namespaces | Binary tagged values |
| Types / schema | Optional XSD validation | Numbers, strings, arrays, maps |
| Compatibility | Enterprise and publishing standard | WebAuthn, COSE, IoT |
| Best for | Validated interchange, documents, RSS | Compact machine-to-machine data |

About the XML format
XML (W3C, 1998) is the enterprise ancestor of JSON: angle-bracketed elements with attributes, nested into trees, carrying optional namespaces, schemas (XSD) and transformation tooling (XPath, XSLT). Office documents, RSS feeds, SOAP services, Android layouts and thousands of industry interchange standards (HL7, METS, SBML) are built on it.
It remains the right choice where validation and self-description matter more than brevity: schemas catch malformed documents at the door, namespaces let multiple vocabularies coexist in one file. The price is verbosity — XML files run two to four times larger than the same JSON, and hand-reading deeply nested XML is nobody's hobby.
+ Strengths
- ✓Schema validation catches bad data at the boundary
- ✓Namespaces and attributes model rich semantics
- ✓Decades of enterprise tooling (XPath, XSLT, SOAP)
! Limitations
- −Verbose — 2–4× larger than equivalent JSON
- −Harder to read by hand
- −Modern web APIs have moved on to JSON
About the CBOR format
CBOR (RFC 8949) is what happens when JSON decides to stop wasting bytes: the same objects, arrays, strings and numbers, but length-prefixed binary instead of text. It is the credential format inside WebAuthn passkeys, the payload format of COSE signing and a favourite of embedded devices that cannot afford verbose JSON.
Decoding CBOR to JSON is the everyday debugging move: dump what a token, sensor or authenticator actually sent, then read it like ordinary JSON. The mapping is lossless for the data model both formats share.
+ Strengths
- ✓IETF standard with a strict data model
- ✓Much smaller than equivalent JSON
- ✓Round-trips to JSON without data loss
! Limitations
- −Not human-readable without a decoder
- −Fewer tools speak it than JSON
Why convert XML to CBOR?
Converting makes sense where the strengths of CBOR meet what XML cannot give you. IETF standard with a strict data model Meanwhile Verbose — 2–4× larger than equivalent JSON One pass through the converter above puts your file on the right side of that trade-off.
Frequently asked questions
Is this XML to CBOR converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Is there a file size limit for XML to CBOR?
The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.
Are formulas, styles or multiple sheets converted?
No — this conversion extracts the data itself into CBOR. Formulas are exported as their current values, styling is not carried over, and multi-sheet workbooks convert sheet by sheet. For full fidelity between spreadsheet formats, exchange within the same tool family.
How large can my XML file be?
Since everything runs locally in your browser, the real limit is your device memory rather than an upload cap. Files up to a few hundred megabytes are usually fine on a modern computer; extremely large ones simply take longer.
