Xvid WIM
100% private — files never leave your device

Xvid Video and Windows Imaging Format exist for different jobs: Xvid is the open-source DivX competitor — the other MPEG-4 ASP encoder behind a decade of movie downloads. Extracting WIM to ZIP exposes the files inside Windows images without deployment tools.

Because the whole conversion happens on your device, it is instant, unlimited and genuinely private — no accounts, no watermarks, no files on anyone's server. Multiple files are converted in one go.

About the Xvid format

Xvid is the open-source implementation of the same MPEG-4 ASP profile DivX commercialized — after the original was open-sourced following a legal scuffle, Xvid became the encoder of choice for a decade of scene releases and personal rips.

Identical migration path as DivX: decode through ffmpeg, re-encode to H.264. The video quality at its usual bitrates survives the trip better than DivX's worst files, thanks to Xvid's tunable quantization.

+Strengths

  • ✓Open-source and configurable
  • ✓Enormous existing content corpus
  • ✓Decodes via ffmpeg everywhere

!Limitations

  • −Same ASP-era limitations as DivX
  • −Packed bitstream quirks in some files
  • −Development ended years ago

About the WIM format

WIM (Windows Imaging Format) is how Microsoft ships Windows itself: the install media and deployment images are WIM files, holding a complete filesystem snapshot with single-instancing (identical files stored once). It is Windows' answer to tar — file-based rather than sector-based.

Opening one without deployment tooling (DISM, 7-Zip on Windows) is awkward. Extracting WIM to ZIP exposes the files inside — drivers, scripts, provisioned apps — on any system, no Windows required.

+Strengths

  • ✓Windows' native image format
  • ✓Single-instancing deduplicates identical files

!Limitations

  • −Opaque without Microsoft tooling
  • −Files inside may be Windows-locked

Why convert Xvid to WIM?

There is a concrete reason this conversion exists: Same ASP-era limitations as DivX WIM sidesteps that — Windows' native image format If that is your situation, the tool above settles it in seconds, entirely on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Xvid to WIM converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for Xvid to WIM?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

Will the audio track be kept?

Yes. The audio is carried over and re-encoded to the standard audio codec of WIM, staying in sync with the video. If your Xvid file has multiple audio tracks, the first one is used.

Why is video conversion slower than image conversion?

Every frame has to be decoded and re-encoded. This site runs that work on your own CPU via WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, but a multi-minute video reasonably takes a few minutes. Images, by comparison, are single-frame jobs.
