3DS to GLB Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
GLB is what three.js, model-viewer, Unity and AR quick-look consume — the best choice for showing models on websites. If your files are still in 3DS format, this page is the shortcut: 3DS is the original 3D Studio mesh format from 1990 — chunk-based binary that game pipelines and asset stores still carry by the terabyte.
iLoveConverter processes everything locally on your computer, which makes it private and fast: no upload wait, no server storage, no limits. Add as many files as you like — batch conversion is built in.
How 3DS compares to GLB
| 3DS | GLB | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Binary chunks (0x4D4D main) | Scene graph + mesh + animation |
| Compatibility | 3ds Max, Blender, three.js | Web/AR/game engines native |
| Best for | Legacy game and store assets | Web, AR and full 3D scenes |

About the 3DS format
3DS is the chunk-based binary mesh format of Autodesk's original 3D Studio (1990). Entire generations of game assets, product visualizations and Turbosquid listings live in it, and its chunk structure (every block self-describing with ID and length) kept it forward-compatible for two decades.
Three.js ships a TDS parser, so 3DS files convert straight to glTF/OBJ in the browser — meshes, materials and UVs survive; lights and keyframers of the original format are skipped as display-only.
+ Strengths
- ✓Ubiquitous legacy asset format
- ✓Self-describing chunk structure
- ✓Direct browser-side conversion
! Limitations
- −No animation or skeleton data
- −8.3 filenames inside
- −Vertex limit per mesh (~64k)
About the GLB format
GLB is the binary form of glTF 2.0 — the format the Khronos Group designed as “JPEG of 3D”. One self-contained file carries geometry, a full scene hierarchy, PBR materials with textures, skeletal animation and morph targets. It is the native asset format of three.js, Unity, Unreal, Blender and WebXR.
Converting to GLB is usually the upgrade path from OBJ/STL: materials become physically based and embedded, and scenes become portable in a single file. One honest caveat: Draco-compressed GLBs save space but many loaders need explicit decoder setup — plain GLB plays everywhere unconditionally.
+ Strengths
- ✓PBR materials, hierarchy and animation in one file
- ✓The web/AR standard — loads natively in three.js
- ✓Compact binary with texture embedding
! Limitations
- −Mesh-only: no CAD solids or NURBS
- −Older niche tools may not know glTF
Why convert 3DS to GLB?
There is a concrete reason this conversion exists: No animation or skeleton data GLB sidesteps that — PBR materials, hierarchy and animation in one file If that is your situation, the tool above settles it in seconds, entirely on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this 3DS to GLB converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Will my model look the same as a GLB?
Geometry, hierarchy and standard materials convert faithfully. Note that Draco-compressed GLB files and exotic extensions are not supported — export those as plain GLB from your original tool first.
Will my GLB model keep its colors and textures?
Only if GLB can store them. Geometry converts faithfully; appearance data survives only when the target format has a place to put it. For full materials, GLB is usually the right target.
Does the scale or orientation of the model change?
Vertex data is converted as-is. Formats without a unit system (like STL) are interpreted as millimeters by most 3D-printing tools — scale before converting if your model uses different units.
