About the 3DS format
3DS is the chunk-based binary mesh format of Autodesk's original 3D Studio (1990). Entire generations of game assets, product visualizations and Turbosquid listings live in it, and its chunk structure (every block self-describing with ID and length) kept it forward-compatible for two decades.
Three.js ships a TDS parser, so 3DS files convert straight to glTF/OBJ in the browser — meshes, materials and UVs survive; lights and keyframers of the original format are skipped as display-only.

About the ZIP format
ZIP (PKWARE, 1989) is the archive format the world agreed on: per-file Deflate compression (or plain store), a central directory that lets tools list and extract single files without touching the rest, and thirty-five years of universal support. Windows, macOS, Linux, phones and browsers all open ZIP natively.
Its compression ratio is middle-of-the-road next to 7z, and its encryption story is genuinely mixed: the classic ZipCrypto is broken, while AES-256 works only in tools that opted in. For maximum compatibility of everyday sharing, though, ZIP remains the only safe answer.

Only if ZIP can store them. Geometry converts faithfully; appearance data survives only when the target format has a place to put it. For full materials, GLB is usually the right target.
