AZW to EPUB Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
EPUB readers follow you everywhere, but the content is locked in the container — extracting it as text, HTML or a simple PDF unlocks copy, search and printing. If your files are still in AZW format, this page is the shortcut: AZW is Amazon's DRM-era spelling of the MOBI format — same Kindle packaging, different extension on early Kindle store books.
This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.
How AZW compares to EPUB
| AZW | EPUB | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Reflowable, dated engine | Reflowable (fixed-layout option) |
| Editability | Limited tooling | Zip of XHTML — editable |
| Bundling | Single self-contained file | Whole book in one file |
| Best for | Legacy Kindle devices | Universal e-book distribution |

About the AZW format
MOBI is the Mobipocket format Amazon adopted for the original Kindle (2007), later extended as KF8/AZW3. It reflows text like EPUB but with a fraction of the formatting capability — basic styles, images, bookmarks — and its metadata model is decades old. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI uploads for reflowable ebooks in 2022 in favor of EPUB.
Its remaining role is old hardware: early Kindle models and some e-readers that never learned EPUB. Note that DRM-protected Kindle books (AZW/KFX with encryption) are a separate, legally distinct matter from converting MOBI files you created or that are DRM-free.
+Strengths
- ✓Supported by legacy Kindle hardware
- ✓Compact and self-contained
!Limitations
- −Deprecated by Amazon since 2022
- −Weak formatting compared to EPUB3
- −Modern Kindle models prefer EPUB/AZW3
About the EPUB format
EPUB is the open standard of e-books (IDPF, now W3C): a ZIP package of XHTML chapters, CSS styling and metadata, rendered reflowably on any screen size. Text re-wraps to your phone, your e-reader and your monitor; font size, margins and typography belong to the reader, not the publisher. EPUB3 adds fixed-layout support, media overlays (read-aloud) and rich semantics.
It is the universal format of every ebook platform except Kindle (Amazon accepts EPUB uploads since 2022 but converts internally). DRM is optional — many EPUBs are open, library books use Adobe ADE encryption. For text-centric books it is the right long-term choice; heavily designed print layouts survive conversion imperfectly.
+Strengths
- ✓Reflows to any screen — the point of e-books
- ✓Open standard, future-proof, tool-rich
- ✓Accepted by every store and reader app
!Limitations
- −Kindle devices still need conversion to Kindle formats
- −Complex print layouts translate imperfectly
- −DRM variants need specific readers
Why convert AZW to EPUB?
Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Deprecated by Amazon since 2022 EPUB works differently: Reflows to any screen — the point of e-books If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this AZW to EPUB converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Is there a file size limit for AZW to EPUB?
The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.
What about images and covers?
Embedded images and the cover are extracted and re-embedded in the output where the format supports them. Heavily designed layouts may simplify, but the pictures themselves come through.
Is it legal to convert my AZW ebook?
Converting ebooks you legitimately own for personal use is generally fine. Removing DRM protection is a separate legal question that varies by country — this tool does not and will not break copy protection.
