VTT File Format

WebVTT Subtitles category

WebVTT is the subtitle format of the HTML5 track element — the one browsers use to display captions inside web video players.

Typical use: Web video players require VTT for captions, so SRT files must be converted for HTML5 playback.

About the VTT format

WebVTT (W3C) is the subtitle format of HTML5: the `<track>` element in a `<video>` tag loads a .vtt file and browsers render, style and even strip its cues natively. It keeps SRT's readable cue model — timecodes with dots instead of commas (`00:01:15.400`) — and adds a metadata header, CSS styling, positioning (`line`, `position`, `align` cue settings) and voice tags for speakers.

Outside the browser, support is good but not universal: most video players accept VTT, some older devices and TV sets still prefer SRT. The `WEBVTT` header line is mandatory, which trips up naive SRT-to-VTT renames.
