About the VTT format

WebVTT (W3C) is the subtitle format of HTML5: the `<track>` element in a `<video>` tag loads a .vtt file and browsers render, style and even strip its cues natively. It keeps SRT's readable cue model — timecodes with dots instead of commas (`00:01:15.400`) — and adds a metadata header, CSS styling, positioning (`line`, `position`, `align` cue settings) and voice tags for speakers.

Outside the browser, support is good but not universal: most video players accept VTT, some older devices and TV sets still prefer SRT. The `WEBVTT` header line is mandatory, which trips up naive SRT-to-VTT renames.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Native in every browser via HTML5 track
  • ✓CSS styling, positioning and speaker tags
  • ✓Clean upgrade path from SRT

! Limitations

  • −Mandatory header line (no naive renames)
  • −Some hardware players still prefer SRT

About the SSA format

ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is the subtitle format of the fansubbing world, descended from SSA. Where SRT holds plain text, ASS holds a full styling script: fonts, sizes, colors, outlines, exact positioning, rotation, fade-in effects and even karaoke timing — everything a subtitle needs to look designed rather than typed.

That power is also its portability problem: players that don't implement the renderer show ASS subtitles stripped to bare text, or not at all. Converting ASS to SRT keeps every line and timestamp while deliberately discarding the styling — the right trade for devices that only speak plain subtitles.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Full styling: fonts, colors, positioning, effects
  • ✓The fansub standard — huge library of styled subs
  • ✓Karaoke and advanced timing effects

! Limitations

  • −Rendering support varies wildly across players
  • −Conversion to plain formats discards styling
  • −Verbose text format

Frequently asked questions

Is this VTT to SSA converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Is there a file size limit for VTT to SSA?

The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.

How large can my VTT file be?

Since everything runs locally in your browser, the real limit is your device memory rather than an upload cap. Files up to a few hundred megabytes are usually fine on a modern computer; extremely large ones simply take longer.

Is my data safe here?

Yes. The conversion is plain JavaScript running in your tab: the data is parsed and re-serialized in memory, never sent anywhere, and disappears when you close the page.
