100% private — files never leave your device

WebP is a modern image format from Google. It typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar visual quality, supports transparency like PNG, and can even hold animations. Convert J2K images exactly like JP2 — to JPG, PNG or modern formats.

iLoveConverter processes everything locally on your computer, which makes it private and fast: no upload wait, no server storage, no limits. Add as many files as you like — batch conversion is built in.

About the WebP format

WebP is Google's image format, released in 2010 and built on the VP8 video codec. In lossy mode it typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and it also has a true lossless mode that beats PNG. Crucially, one format covers what used to require two: lossy photos with transparency, and even animation, all in a single container.

Browser support is no longer the barrier it once was: Safari added WebP in iOS 14 (2020), and every modern browser now decodes it. The remaining friction is with older desktop software and a hard dimension limit of 16383×16383 pixels, which rules out very large panoramas and print masters.

+Strengths

  • ✓25–35% smaller than JPG at equal visual quality
  • ✓Transparency and animation built into the same format
  • ✓Supported by every current browser and most CDNs
  • ✓Has a genuine lossless mode that out-compresses PNG

!Limitations

  • −Hard limit of 16383×16383 pixels per image
  • −Older photo apps and OS image viewers may not open it
  • −Encoding is more CPU-intensive than JPG

About the J2K format

JPEG 2000 (JP2) replaced JPG's DCT blocks with wavelet transforms: at the same bitrate it shows fewer blocky artifacts, and its lossless mode compresses better than JPG ever could. It was the format of early digital cinema and remains common in archives, medical systems and geospatial pipelines.

Browser support never arrived — Chrome, Firefox and Safari all skip it — so a JP2 file is often invisible on the web. Converting JP2 to JPG or PNG makes archival material viewable anywhere; converting the other way gives long-term storage better compression.

+Strengths

  • ✓True lossless mode
  • ✓Better quality per byte than JPG
  • ✓ROI / progressive decoding built in

!Limitations

  • −No browser support
  • −Slow to encode compared to JPG

Why convert WebP to J2K?

Converting makes sense where the strengths of J2K meet what WebP cannot give you. True lossless mode Meanwhile Hard limit of 16383×16383 pixels per image One pass through the converter above puts your file on the right side of that trade-off.

Frequently asked questions

Is this WebP to J2K converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Will I lose quality converting WebP to J2K?

No — J2K is a lossless format, so every pixel of the converted image matches your original WebP file. You can also adjust the quality/size balance before converting when the target format supports compression.

Will transparent areas survive the conversion to J2K?

Transparency is kept whenever J2K actually supports an alpha channel. If the target format has none (like JPG), transparent areas are flattened onto a white background — that is a property of the format, not of this tool.

What happens to EXIF data and other metadata?

Conversions here re-encode the image, and re-encoding generally does not carry the original metadata over. If the EXIF data of your WebP files matters (camera model, GPS, timestamps), keep the original file as the master and treat the converted copy as the shareable version.
