About the XLSM format
XLSX is the modern Excel workbook (default since Excel 2007, same OOXML zip-package idea as DOCX). One file can carry multiple sheets, typed cells, formulas that recalculate, charts, conditional formatting and pivot caches — a small application, not just a table. LibreOffice, Google Sheets and WPS open it natively, and server-side libraries can read and write it without Excel installed.
Being a spreadsheet program's file, it is a poor plain-data exchange format: formulas reference cell positions that break when rows are reordered, hidden sheets and cached values surprise consumers, and the zip package is heavier than CSV. About the EPUB format
EPUB is the open standard of e-books (IDPF, now W3C): a ZIP package of XHTML chapters, CSS styling and metadata, rendered reflowably on any screen size. Text re-wraps to your phone, your e-reader and your monitor; font size, margins and typography belong to the reader, not the publisher. EPUB3 adds fixed-layout support, media overlays (read-aloud) and rich semantics.
It is the universal format of every ebook platform except Kindle (Amazon accepts EPUB uploads since 2022 but converts internally). DRM is optional — many EPUBs are open, library books use Adobe ADE encryption. For text-centric books it is the right long-term choice; heavily designed print layouts survive conversion imperfectly.
