YML to TOML Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
Converting JSON or YAML to TOML feeds the data straight into modern build tools and package configs. If your files are still in YML format, this page is the shortcut: YML is a common alternative extension for YAML files — identical human-friendly structured configuration, just a shorter suffix.
This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.
How YML compares to TOML
| YML | TOML | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Trees + anchors/refs | Tables and key/values |
| Types / schema | Implicit (schema-linted in practice) | Explicit types |
| Compatibility | DevOps standard | Rust/Python ecosystem |
| Best for | Config files and pipelines | Project and tool configuration |

About the YML format
YAML is the configuration language of the DevOps decade: Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions, Docker Compose, Ansible. It is a strict superset of JSON 1.2 — every JSON file is valid YAML — but written with indentation instead of braces, and it adds the two things JSON refuses: comments and anchors (define once, reference everywhere).
Its flexibility is also its trap. Implicit typing famously turns the unquoted version number `1.0` into a float, Norway into boolean false (`no`), and deep indentation makes pasted YAML silently change meaning. Teams that enforce quotes-where-ambiguous and schema linting get the best of both worlds.
+Strengths
- ✓Human-friendly: indentation, minimal punctuation, comments
- ✓Superset of JSON — interops for free
- ✓Anchors reduce repetition in big configs
!Limitations
- −Implicit typing surprises (`no`, `1.0`, `on`)
- −Whitespace errors change meaning silently
- −The full spec is notoriously complex
About the TOML format
TOML (Tom's Obvious Minimal Language, 2013) is config written for humans who read diffs: explicit key = value pairs, `[section]` tables, unambiguous types, and comments everywhere. Rust's Cargo, Python's pyproject.toml, and many modern build tools standardized on it exactly because there is no implicit typing and no indentation to get wrong.
The explicitness costs verbosity on deep structures — four levels of nesting in TOML is a stack of bracketed section headers, where YAML would just indent. For flat-to-medium project configuration it is close to ideal; for deeply nested data, JSON or YAML remain easier.
+Strengths
- ✓Unambiguous types and syntax
- ✓Comment-friendly and diff-friendly
- ✓Standard for Rust and Python project config
!Limitations
- −Deep nesting gets verbose fast
- −Rare in web APIs and serialization
Why convert YML to TOML?
Converting makes sense where the strengths of TOML meet what YML cannot give you. Unambiguous types and syntax Meanwhile Implicit typing surprises (`no`, `1.0`, `on`) One pass through the converter above puts your file on the right side of that trade-off.
Frequently asked questions
Is this YML to TOML converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Is there a file size limit for YML to TOML?
The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.
Is my data safe here?
Yes. The conversion is plain JavaScript running in your tab: the data is parsed and re-serialized in memory, never sent anywhere, and disappears when you close the page.
Are formulas, styles or multiple sheets converted?
No — this conversion extracts the data itself into TOML. Formulas are exported as their current values, styling is not carried over, and multi-sheet workbooks convert sheet by sheet. For full fidelity between spreadsheet formats, exchange within the same tool family.
