YML to XML Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
YML is a common alternative extension for YAML files — identical human-friendly structured configuration, just a shorter suffix. XML is still required by many enterprise imports, sitemap generators and older APIs.
iLoveConverter processes everything locally on your computer, which makes it private and fast: no upload wait, no server storage, no limits. Add as many files as you like — batch conversion is built in.
How YML compares to XML
| YML | XML | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Trees + anchors/refs | Trees with namespaces |
| Types / schema | Implicit (schema-linted in practice) | Optional XSD validation |
| Compatibility | DevOps standard | Enterprise and publishing standard |
| Best for | Config files and pipelines | Validated interchange, documents, RSS |
How to convert YML to XML

About the YML format
YAML is the configuration language of the DevOps decade: Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions, Docker Compose, Ansible. It is a strict superset of JSON 1.2 — every JSON file is valid YAML — but written with indentation instead of braces, and it adds the two things JSON refuses: comments and anchors (define once, reference everywhere).
Its flexibility is also its trap. Implicit typing famously turns the unquoted version number `1.0` into a float, Norway into boolean false (`no`), and deep indentation makes pasted YAML silently change meaning. Teams that enforce quotes-where-ambiguous and schema linting get the best of both worlds.
+Strengths
- ✓Human-friendly: indentation, minimal punctuation, comments
- ✓Superset of JSON — interops for free
- ✓Anchors reduce repetition in big configs
!Limitations
- −Implicit typing surprises (`no`, `1.0`, `on`)
- −Whitespace errors change meaning silently
- −The full spec is notoriously complex
About the XML format
XML (W3C, 1998) is the enterprise ancestor of JSON: angle-bracketed elements with attributes, nested into trees, carrying optional namespaces, schemas (XSD) and transformation tooling (XPath, XSLT). Office documents, RSS feeds, SOAP services, Android layouts and thousands of industry interchange standards (HL7, METS, SBML) are built on it.
It remains the right choice where validation and self-description matter more than brevity: schemas catch malformed documents at the door, namespaces let multiple vocabularies coexist in one file. The price is verbosity — XML files run two to four times larger than the same JSON, and hand-reading deeply nested XML is nobody's hobby.
+Strengths
- ✓Schema validation catches bad data at the boundary
- ✓Namespaces and attributes model rich semantics
- ✓Decades of enterprise tooling (XPath, XSLT, SOAP)
!Limitations
- −Verbose — 2–4× larger than equivalent JSON
- −Harder to read by hand
- −Modern web APIs have moved on to JSON
Why convert YML to XML?
There is a concrete reason this conversion exists: Implicit typing surprises (`no`, `1.0`, `on`) XML sidesteps that — Schema validation catches bad data at the boundary If that is your situation, the tool above settles it in seconds, entirely on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this YML to XML converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Is there a file size limit for YML to XML?
The only limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded. Files up to a few hundred megabytes work fine on a modern desktop browser; very large files simply take a little longer.
Is my data safe here?
Yes. The conversion is plain JavaScript running in your tab: the data is parsed and re-serialized in memory, never sent anywhere, and disappears when you close the page.
Are formulas, styles or multiple sheets converted?
No — this conversion extracts the data itself into XML. Formulas are exported as their current values, styling is not carried over, and multi-sheet workbooks convert sheet by sheet. For full fidelity between spreadsheet formats, exchange within the same tool family.
