AI JPEG
100% private — files never leave your device

Convert to or from JPEG when a tool or form specifically asks for the .jpeg extension — the pixels and compression behave exactly like JPG. If your files are still in AI format, this page is the shortcut: AI is Adobe Illustrator's format — modern versions are PDF-compatible PostScript programs, which is exactly why Ghostscript can open them without Illustrator.

This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.

How to convert AI to JPEG

About the AI format

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native format — and since Illustrator 9 it is literally a PDF-compatible PostScript program: open an .ai in a text editor and you will see a PDF header with Illustrator-private comment streams. That dual nature is why the format renders correctly in Ghostscript even without Adobe's own runtime.

Converting AI to PNG/JPG gives clients and web pages an instant preview; converting to PDF keeps every vector for print. Either way the file never leaves your browser.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Industry-standard vector artwork
  • ✓PDF-compatible — renders without Adobe tools
  • ✓Keeps layers/artboards for round-trips

! Limitations

  • −Private extension streams are Adobe-only
  • −Newest features may not render in GS
  • −Large embedded images bloat wasm memory

About the JPEG format

JPG (short for JPEG, the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee that standardized it in 1992) has been the default photo format for over three decades. It compresses photographs using the discrete cosine transform: the image is split into 8×8 blocks, and details the human eye is bad at noticing are discarded. The result is files many times smaller than uncompressed data, at a quality level you control when saving.

In practice JPG is unbeatable for photographs and smooth gradients — camera memory cards, messaging apps and the web all assume it. It is a poor fit for screenshots, logos or anything with sharp edges and flat color, where compression leaves visible ringing around text. There is no transparency support, color depth is capped at 8 bits per channel, and every re-save with compression compounds tiny generational losses.

+ Strengths

  • ✓Opens on literally every device, app and browser made in the last 30 years
  • ✓Compresses photos dramatically — typically 10:1 or better with little visible loss
  • ✓Quality level is adjustable, so you can trade fidelity for file size
  • ✓Mature ecosystem: EXIF metadata, ICC profiles and progressive loading all supported

! Limitations

  • −Lossy — artifacts appear on text, sharp edges and flat areas
  • −No transparency, so overlays and logos need PNG or WebP instead
  • −Repeated re-saving at low quality permanently degrades the image

Why convert AI to JPEG?

Converting makes sense where the strengths of JPEG meet what AI cannot give you. Opens on literally every device, app and browser made in the last 30 years Meanwhile Private extension streams are Adobe-only One pass through the converter above puts your file on the right side of that trade-off.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI to JPEG converter really free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.

Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?

Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.

Will converting AI to JPEG reduce quality?

JPEG uses lossy compression, so a small amount of recompression is unavoidable. The quality slider lets you choose between maximum fidelity and smallest file size — the default is visually indistinguishable for photos.

Does AI to JPEG keep layers and line weights?

No — the output carries the geometry at its exact coordinates. Layer colours, line weights, dimension styles and block attributes are not converted.

Can I convert DWG files here?

No. DWG is a binary format without a reliable browser-side parser. Save the drawing as DXF in your CAD software first — every CAD system can export it.
