DAE to glTF Converter
Processing entirely on your device — large files may take a moment.
Convert .gltf to GLB when you need one portable file, or to OBJ/STL for tools and 3D printers that expect those. If your files are still in DAE format, this page is the shortcut: Collada (DAE) is the old XML-based 3D interchange format from Sony/Khronos — still what SketchUp exports and countless asset stores hand out. Meshes, hierarchies and materials, but heavyweight XML.
This converter runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your files never leave your device, nothing is uploaded, and there are no watermarks, sign-ups or queues. Drop in several files at once to convert them as a batch.
How DAE compares to glTF
| DAE | glTF | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | XML scene graph | JSON scene + external buffer |
| Materials | Phong/lambert profiles | PBR, textures as separate files |
| Compatibility | SketchUp, Blender, asset stores | All glTF loaders |
| Best for | Legacy 3D interchange | Editing and debugging assets |

About the DAE format
Collada (DAE) was the Khronos Group's first attempt at a universal 3D interchange format — an XML schema carrying meshes, scene hierarchies, materials and even skinning. SketchUp's default export, countless asset stores and older game pipelines all speak it.
Its XML verbosity is why the industry moved to glTF: a DAE can weigh ten times its GLB equivalent. Converting to GLB shrinks it for the web, OBJ/STL strip it to raw geometry for editing or printing.
+ Strengths
- ✓Widely exported by DCC tools and asset stores
- ✓Complete scene semantics in XML
- ✓Human-readable structure
! Limitations
- −Verbose XML — large files, slow parsing
- −Superseded by glTF for web delivery
- −Material definitions vary between exporters
About the glTF format
glTF in its JSON form (.gltf) is the readable side of the glTF 2.0 family: scene graph, meshes, materials, cameras and animations described in JSON, with binary geometry in a separate .bin buffer and textures as their own image files. Seeing the structure as text is genuinely useful when you are debugging an asset pipeline or hand-editing a material.
The trade-off is portability: a .gltf is only self-contained when its buffers are embedded as data URIs, which bloats the file. Everywhere you just want to ship or drop a model into a viewer, GLB is the better answer — and that is exactly what the gltf-to-glb page does for you, in your browser, without uploading the model.
+ Strengths
- ✓Human-readable JSON structure
- ✓Same PBR materials and scene data as GLB
- ✓Easy to diff, debug and hand-edit
! Limitations
- −Usually needs separate .bin and texture files
- −Breaks when files are moved apart
- −Larger than GLB once buffers are embedded
Why convert DAE to glTF?
Think of it as moving your file to the container that fits the job. Verbose XML — large files, slow parsing glTF works differently: Human-readable JSON structure If any of that sounds like your task, run the conversion — it takes seconds and nothing leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Is this DAE to glTF converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily conversion limits. The site is supported by advertising.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your files never leave your device — that is what makes it instant and private.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android?
Yes. Anything with a modern browser works: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No software installation is required.
Will my model look the same as a GLB?
Geometry, hierarchy and standard materials convert faithfully. Note that Draco-compressed GLB files and exotic extensions are not supported — export those as plain GLB from your original tool first.
How large can the DAE file be?
Everything runs on your device, so memory is the only ceiling. Dense meshes with millions of triangles convert fine on a desktop computer, just over a slightly longer coffee break.
Will my glTF model keep its colors and textures?
Only if glTF can store them. Geometry converts faithfully; appearance data survives only when the target format has a place to put it. For full materials, GLB is usually the right target.
