DV is the tape-era MiniDV camcorder format — standard-definition interlaced footage from the 1990s and 2000s.
Typical use: Digitised MiniDV tapes convert to MP4 so family archives survive modern devices.
About the DV format
DV is the format of the MiniDV tape era: fixed 25 Mbps (or 50 Mbps for DVCPRO) intra-frame compression, interlaced standard definition, and timecode — designed so camcorders could write frames to tape as fast as they arrived. FireWire transfers produced raw .dv files that edit suites cut natively.
Digitising old tapes produces DV files that modern software increasingly cannot open. Converting to MP4 (deinterlacing is handled by the re-encode) keeps decades of family footage playable — at a fraction of the 13 GB/hour the original consumes.
